History of Fort Bend A&M University Mothers' Club

The Fort Bend A&M University Mothers’ Club held its organizational meeting on March 28, 1968 in the Community Room of the Fort Bend Federal Savings & Loan Association. Officers elected were Mrs. Andrew Briscoe, Jr., President; Mrs. J.P. Belin, Vice President; Mrs. Ronald Chase, Reporter; and Mrs. John Rogers, Parliamentarian. There were 30 charter members and annual dues were $3.50.

The first fundraising effort was selling candy made by Atkinson Candy Company at a booth in the commercial building at the 1968 Fort Bend County Fair. Proceeds were to be used for an A&M scholarship for a Fort Bend County student.

The 1969-70 Fort Bend A&M University Mothers’ Club Yearbook listed the following club “Projects”:

Scholarship Fund
Fort Bend County Fair Queen
Cotton Ball Pageant Queen
Hometown Club Picture in Yearbook
First Aid Supplies for Bonfire
Birthday cards to students
Introduce high school students to Texas A&M

In addition the club promoted and participated in Fort Bend County “Hometown Club” picnics held on campus before A&M football games. Students were invited as guests to enjoy the spread. In 1970 a local paper reported that there were 75 Fort Bend County students at Texas A&M.

Based on information in early club scrapbooks, the first scholarship given by the club was a $200 “grant” to Wade Phelps, probably in 1972. This was followed by a $300 scholarship to Joseph Pavlicek, Salutatorian of Needville High School.

Early fundraising activities to raise scholarship funds expanded to include hosting a concert by the Singing Cadets and piecing a maroon and white quilt.

Education is the key to a strong community and the members of the Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club are committed to this principle.  Each year the Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club participates in the annual Winter in Aggieland and Parents Weekend Boutique at Texas A & M University and hosts multiple fundraising events.  Monies raised by the club go directly to fund scholarships for Texas A&M students from Fort Bend County and to support recognized campus organizations at Texas A&M.  In 2005 we awarded $11,625 in scholarships to 18 students and donated $2140 to campus organizations.  Records of the Texas A&M Foundation show over $170,000 in scholarships and donations from the Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club since 1984.

In 2006 we will stage our first “Big Band Bash”, a dinner and dance featuring swing music from the Big Band Era performed by the Aggieland Orchestra.

Our scholarship program is open to any Texas A&M University student from Fort Bend County who meets the qualifying criteria. Selection is based on a combination of factors including accomplishment and need.

The Fort Bend Aggie Moms’ Club provides friendship, education, networking and support for our members, our students and the university. We come together to learn the things our kids don’t tell us, have fun and share the joys and tears of parenting through the college years.
